Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the defining technology being adopted by the design and construction industries. BIM is the development and use of a computer software model to simulate the construction and operation of a facility. It consists of a 3D virtual model of a project containing information such as areas, volumes, doors and window counts, clash detection, etc., that can subsequently be interpreted automatically by estimating, scheduling, structural and MEP programs. This technology allows the team to create digital presentations of all stages of the building process and simulate real-world performance, stream-lining work flow, increasing production and improving quality. The information is also used for design decision-making, production of high-quality construction documents, predicting performance, cost estimating and construction planning, and eventually, for managing and operation of the facility.
The construction industry is slowly moving forward in its efforts to adopt BIM technology and methods and O&G Industries has made a commitment to implement the process of BIM on future projects. BIM enables us to work with the designers to create a virtual model of the project prior to start of construction. This will help us to build smarter by constructing the building virtually prior to actual construction. The intended result is to reduce field errors and corrections and to aid in planning and site logistics to achieve an efficient construction sequence, keeping the project schedule and budget on track.
